SAMPLE LETTER TO LEGISLATORS

The 2010 Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan adopted a resolution exhorting the Michigan legislature to pass a statewide anti-bullying bill.  Michigan is one of only five states that currently does not have such a law.  You can find contact information for your representative and senator at http://house.mi.gov and http://senate.michigan.gov/fysenator/fysenator/htm.

Remember, handwritten letters that include a personal example are likely to receive more attention than e-mail.  Please write one and encourage others to do so. A sample letter to legislators follows, though your own words will be more effective than a letter crafted by someone else.

(Heading)

Dear -

The Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, of which I am a member (omit if non-Episcopalian), at its 2010 Annual Convention adopted a resolution on Bullying and its PreventionThe resolution urges the Michigan legislature to adopt a statewide anti-bullying bill, mandating all Michigan K-12 schools to create and enforce anti-bullying policies protecting all students, instructors, staff members and administrators.

I am writing to request that you support passage of such a bill.  All individuals and groups deserve to be free of bullying, in whatever form it may be perpetrated.  Children and youth in particular are vulnerable to attack and must be protected from bullying and other forms of harassment.

I greatly appreciate your work for all residents of Michigan, and ask you to continue in this laudable service by supporting anti-bullying legislation.

Sincerely,
